I took the Amen test for my younger brother. It came back Type 8. He's been misdiagnosed a bunch... with ADHD, BPD, depression. And this finally made some sense. So I'm looking for real-world advice. Can you recommend any therapy that's helped, supplements, even routines? Thank you.

It's tough to see a loved one struggle through misdiagnosis, sorry for that! For Type 8, which is often associated with the prefrontal cortex, many find that a combination of talk therapy and some lifestyle changes can make a big difference. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or even Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which is often used for BPD, can be really effective for learning to manage intense emotions and impulsive behaviors. In terms of supplements, some people have reported good results with things like Omega-3 fatty acids and L-Tyrosine to help with focus and mood, but it's crucial to talk to a doctor before starting anything new! As for routines, a consistent sleep schedule, regular exercise, especially anything that gets the heart rate up, and a diet low in sugar and processed foods are often recommended. It's about finding what works for him, and every step you take to support him is a huge help!

I'm sorry to hear this but I'm glad you found something that resonates for your brother!! Type 8 from Amen's work can easily be mistaken for other conditions, especially with that overactive ACG and often low serotonin.

I got the same recommendation as @0pt1m1z3r for therapy and routine.. CBT is often helpful for reframing negative thoughts and managing anxiety. Some find EMDR surprisingly effective if trauma contributes to the anxiety. Any routine that promotes calm is also advised. Think consistent, moderate exercise like yoga or walking. Predictable sleep and regular mindful breathing exercises throughout the day can also make a big difference in quieting the ACG. It's all about calming that busy brain.

Regarding supplements, there are popular options often discussed for serotonin and calming the nervous system. However, I always stress the importance of checking with a doctor about dosages and potential interactions.

Hope this helps! Finding what works for the individual is always the biggest step!!
